Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village -- A Brief History
On March 16, 1999 the Kentucky-Tennessee District of Kiwanis International chartered the Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Sweetwater. The Club became part of Division 4 of the Kentucky-Tennessee District.
The Club began with 34 charter members. The charter President was Gerald Denney, who served for 19 months in that capacity. During the first six months the membership dwindled to a low of 25. The remaining active members decided to re-energize and succeeded to build a solid Club. Twelve months later the membership had increased to 40 active members. Currently, the club is over ten years old, and has grown to 75 to 85 active members with well attended bi-monthly meetings.
The Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village comprises a very energetic group of members having a great diversity of backgrounds. Most are relatively new Kiwanians, with a handful of veteran Kiwanians that have moved from other areas to settle in Tellico Village, but all are intent on promoting the objectives of Kiwanis.
The Club didn't waste any time in making local communities aware of "the new club in town." The club members immediately established some aggressive committees and Club goals for service to young children, youth, and the community as well as for Club growth and interclub visitations. This ambitious program was backed up by a dedicated fund-raising effort. The members put themselves on notice of what they intended to do with a well executed publicity program.
In the Club's short history has sponsored three new Kiwanis clubs: one in Farragut, TN; one in Vonore, TN; and the third in Lenoir City, TN. Recruitment has been a tradition with this Kiwanis club. If you consider the recruitment of the original 34 members plus the addition of 50 new club members plus 23 members for the Farragut club, 25 members for the Vonore club, and 24 members for the Lenoir City club, the Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village has recruited over 155 new members for the Kiwanis family in only ten short years. In addition, our club organized and continues to sponsor a Key Club with over 40 members at nearby Loudon County High School.
The Kiwanis Club of Tellico Village has succeeded in attaining the Distinguished Club Award every year of its existence. It boasts having many Kiwanis International Hixon Fellows, Distinguished Presidents, Lieutenant Governors, and one District Governor.
All this has resulted in an exciting service organization in the Loudon County, TN that enjoys a great reputation as a club that is known as a "can do" club whose energies, considerable talents, and experience base are dedicated to serving, with pride, the young people and the general community, as well as to promoting overall Kiwanis International objectives.
